Recognised for powerful interpretations of new as well as established repertoire, the Lawson Trio enjoys an international career dating back eighteen years to the group’s founding at Cambridge University. The group has performed at all of the UK’s major venues, as well as broadcasting live for BBC Radio 3’s Live in Concert and In Tune and for Classic FM, Australia, as part of the final rounds of the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.

Keen to devise their own projects as well as commission new music, their recent commemorative project Echoes of World War One, saw the Trio curate collaborative concerts at London’s Kings Place and The Forge and lead educational workshops and concerts at institutions including the Junior Royal Academy of Music and Wells Cathedral School. The ensemble’s debut CD The Long Way Home was met with great critical acclaim, receiving a five-star review in BBC Music Magazine. The Trio’s latest CD of chamber music by Gordon Crosse is due for release in the autumn.

Not just formidable musicians, they are questing spirits who have shown a rare commitment to the creation of new music…

- BBC Music Magazine

…irresistibly beautiful as played here by the Lawson Trio....

- Michael White, The Telegraph

The Lawson Trio made it seem wistfully attractive.

- Andrew Clements, The Guardian

...In both pieces [Turnage and Muhly] the Lawsons showed intelligence and knitted well together..... [The Gordon Crosse Trio] was played with far greater feeling and lovely touches.

- Neil Fisher, The Times

…The Lawson Trio brought warm-toned strings and a lyrical piano line to the first movement... the middle movement was graceful and witty, while the final Presto was sprightly and spicy, its moments of turbulence, and surprising suspensions and chromaticism deftly highlighted by all three players. A committed and very convincing performance…

- Frances Wilson, Bachtrack.com

…Between Haydn's Gypsy Rondo Trio and Ravel's A minor Piano Trio, the Lawson Trio's polished and refined recital sandwiched three works specially composed for them, all premieres of one kind or another….

- Andrew Clements, The Guardian

...The players reciprocated with a deeply-felt response, unfolding the score to full advantage. This triptych of premieres could hardly have been accorded more sensitive or polished treatment.….

- Paul Conway, Tempo Magazine

….This is a brave debut from the Lawson Trio, but a wise one. Not just formidable musicians, they are questing spirits who have shown a rare commitment to the creation of new music…These are rich pickings indeed…..

- Helen Wallace, BBC Music Magazine

….This fine group are not content to peruse the big back catalogue of works for piano, violin and cello...

- Paul Driver, The Sunday Times

…The girls from the Lawson Trio were delightful. They immediately developed a relationship with the children - who were in absolute awe of them. I am so glad that I went in - I just wouldn't have appreciated how fabulous it was if I hadn't been there…..

- Pam Handson, Nook Lane Junior School

- John France, Music Web International, 2019

Beautifully rendered…This [Gordon Crosse’s ‘Piano Trio’] is an impressive score and its stature was evident in the Lawson Trio’s cogent and convincing interpretation.”

- Paul Conway, Musical Opinion, April-June 2019

Annabelle Lawson gives a brittle, virtuoso performance, often tense and edgy, but always meticulous in its detail of the Sonata No.1 for piano. She is also the fantastic pianist in the two movement Trio for violin, cello and piano performed by her Lawson Trio… For me, the highly colourful intense music of the first movement suggested an eastern orthodox atmosphere but best of all, in the second movement, there was the dazzling mercurial piano writing which sounded so excitingly alive”

- Alan Cooper, British Music Society, September 2019
